Thanks all.

The golden globe sits on top of the Swirle Pavilion that forms part of the 'Art on the Riverside' scheme. Inside the sculpture are the names of the destinations of ships which departed from the Tyne during its industrial heyday.

My 10-20mm Sigma just isn't wide enough any more......but......Sigma have just launched a 8-16mm which is now top of my 'deserately want' shopping list.
